Raising Tomorrow: The Waterford Skate Park Project

The saying, “It takes a village to raise a child,” rings true when reflecting on the efforts behind the Waterford Skate Park Project. As we consider our roles in shaping the future for younger generations, it’s clear that the community is key to making a lasting impact. Kerry Bockenholt, Chair of the Waterford Skate Park Committee, has dedicated over seven years to creating a space where local youth can engage in positive activities, keeping them physically and socially active.

The Waterford Skate Park Project

The idea for a community skatepark came from Bockenholt’s personal observations of local youth struggling with boredom and mischief in the absence of accessible social spaces. As a parent and volunteer, Bockenholt recognized the need for a safe, active space for youth to gather and develop a sense of purpose. This led to the creation of a project that would become a beacon of hope and activity for generations to come.

The Journey to the Waterford Skate Park

In 2018, the Waterford Skate Park Committee was officially formed, and the process of bringing the idea to life began. The committee faced many early challenges, particularly with finding the right direction. “The first year was a big learning curve full of meetings, deputations, and determining the proper next steps,” said Bockenholt. It wasn’t until the committee began collaborating with other local groups, such as the Lions and Lionette Clubs, the Legion, and the Chamber of Commerce, that the project truly gained momentum. As Bockenholt explained, “If you get everyone together, the whole community is asking for [the skatepark], not just one person.”

The Power of Community Support

One of the key factors behind the success of the Waterford Skate Park was the support from various community organizations. The effort to create the skatepark became a community-driven initiative, and the involvement of various local groups was vital to its success. Bockenholt credits the diverse team that came together to fundraise and strategize throughout the project’s phases.

The committee also emphasized the importance of acknowledging when others have expertise that can move the project forward faster and more effectively. “Put your ego aside,” Bockenholt advised. “Use people’s strong suits! This will help you get the project done faster and with excellent quality.”

Design and Features of the Waterford Skate Park

The design of the Waterford Skate Park was created by a local community member with a deep understanding of the needs of youth in the area. Partnering with Drop In Skateparks, the park will feature an 8,737 square foot space that includes a 1,500 square foot bowl, numerous rails, banks, ledges, and a stair set. This design will provide a range of challenges for skaters of all skill levels to help them grow and improve.

Fundraising and Community Involvement

To bring this project to life, fundraising played a crucial role. A variety of events such as steak barbecues, auctions, silent auctions, merchandise sales, and more were held to raise awareness and funds. One unique fundraising initiative, ‘The Board Project,’ has seen local artists design and donate over 100 custom skateboards, which will be auctioned off in the spring of 2024.

These fundraising events have not only raised money but also fostered a sense of community-mindedness and togetherness, bringing people together for a common goal.

Looking to the Future

Bockenholt reflects on the legacy that the skatepark will leave for future generations. “This park has nothing for me – my kids are grown and have moved away. But it leaves a legacy for the next generations,” she said. “It’s showing them that if we all band together, you can accomplish amazing things.”

The Waterford Skate Park is expected to be completed by May 2024, and though Bockenholt may not be the one using the park herself, she’s proud of the lasting impact it will have on the community. “I’ve met some friends who are going to be my friends for life!” she shares with a smile.
