Explore the Narrative of Cake & Crumb…
“Life is short, make it sweet” became somewhat of a motto during the pandemic for Katherine Dougherty and her family.
At the time, Kat was a Detective Constable working for the Hamilton Police Service. Having been hired in 2015, Kat dove head first into everything her career had to offer. She embraced the long nights and busy shifts, but always looked forward to returning home to her family.
Along with the rest of the world, things changed suddenly at the beginning of 2020. In addition to the pandemic, Kat’s youngest son began battling an illness. As things shut down one by one, Kat took a leave of absence to become a caregiver. With delays in testing and hospital lockdowns, it wasn’t long before she decided to resign from policing to focus on her family.
To say life was stressful is an understatement. But one of the things that kept her spirits up was baking.
Shortly before being hired with the police, Kat took a cake decorating class and immediately fell in love. Much of her spare time revolved around baking and decorating cakes. With the pandemic in full effect, Kat dug out her old decorating tools and began taking advantage of being housebound. It wasn’t long before her love of baking turned into a full-blown obsession.
In the fall of 2020, as her son’s health began improving, Kat took a leap of faith and opened Cake & Crumb. Open three days a week, Cake & Crumb operated out of the Wincey Mills Market in Paris, Ontario. What started as a tiny business quickly bloomed into something nobody expected. Week after week, Kat would sell out. Within 12 months, Cake & Crumb outgrew the market.
Last year, Cake & Crumb found their forever home in the Artisan Village in Brantford, Ontario – and the Dougherty’s couldn’t be happier. With an ever-expanding staff, hundreds of cake orders per month, and booking 12-18 months in advance for weddings, Kat is living her dream.
Cake & Crumb is open five days a week for walk-in customers. With a large menu to order from in store and online, Kat and her staff are dedicated to providing freshly baked made-from-scratch cakes. Custom cakes and wedding cakes, which are the cornerstone of the business, can be ordered via email with as little as one to two weeks’ notice.
