It’s 1947– two years since the war that shook Europe and changed the very coarse of history. In a sleepy Polish village, the lives of those most affected are intertwined through song and verse as the residents of Maeł Niebo (or ‘Little Heaven’), a refuge tenement for the impoverished and displaced, grapple to rebuild their lives and look towards the hope of the future.
This timely new musical explores overcoming tragedy, and the power of community.
‘Little Heaven’ is written by Cambridge-based mother and daughter duo, Lori and Piper Distel, who have previously penned two other Canadian musicals: “Curiouser” and “Miss Scrooge.”
Why is a story like Little Heaven important?
Holocaust education is crucial in today’s climate for its role in educating, fostering empathy, and reminding society about the consequences of prejudice. It serves as a poignant reminder of the horrors of the past, offering insights into contemporary issues and encouraging critical dialogue to prevent history from repeating itself. Through its portrayal of resilience and suffering, Little Heaven promotes understanding, tolerance, and the importance of standing against injustice, making it a significant tool for reflection and societal awareness.
Is Little Heaven appropriate for all ages?
There is no official rating system for theatre, however, Little Heaven does feature scenes that depict violence and coarse language, as well as characters that portray racist and prejudiced behaviour. We look to parents and guardians to judge the maturity and boundaries of their children when attending this production. Even so, Little Heaven is an important story and we welcome those from all walks of life to Join us in the audience!
